Publication: FIXR
Article Title: Kitchen Design Trends Report 2026
Publication Date: January 8, 2026
Author: Laura Madrigal
FIXR surveyed 101 interior design professionals to identify the kitchen trends defining 2026. The comprehensive report reveals that the all-white kitchen era is officially over, with homeowners embracing warm neutrals, personalized style, and wellness-focused design. This marks a significant departure from the sterile, “Pinterest-perfect” kitchens that dominated the past decade.
Our Perspective on the Shift:
When FIXR asked about fading kitchen trends, here’s the insight I shared:
“The kitchen is finally being freed from the tyranny of ‘showroom perfect.’ We’re seeing a return to closed upper cabinetry in rich walnut or deep, moody colors instead of stark white with open shelving that collects dust.”
Key Findings That Align With Our Design Philosophy:
The report revealed several trends that perfectly align with the intentional, wellness-focused design we practice at The Intentional Design Studio:
The All-White Kitchen Is Officially Out
A staggering 86% of experts agree that all-white and all-gray kitchens are on their way out. This isn’t just a color shift—it’s a rejection of the impersonal, sterile aesthetic that has dominated kitchen design for over a decade.
Personalized Style Leads the Way
47% of design professionals identified personalized style and self-expression as the biggest kitchen design trend for 2026. Homeowners are tired of cookie-cutter kitchens and are embracing individuality instead.
Wellness-Focused Design is Rising
31% of experts believe wellness and healthy living are driving kitchen layouts. Features like dedicated prep zones for fresh produce, advanced water filtration, and specialized storage that supports balanced lifestyles are becoming standard requests.
Warm Neutrals and Earth Tones Dominate
67% of experts confirm that warm neutrals and earth tones are replacing the cool, impersonal palette of the past. Deep greens, browns, and beiges create kitchens that feel inviting rather than clinical.
Open Shelving Is Fading
32% of experts agree that open shelving is on its way out. While it looked beautiful in photos, the reality of keeping it dust-free and organized proved impractical for most homeowners. We’re seeing a return to closed cabinetry that’s both functional and beautiful.
Insufficient Storage Is the #1 Buyer Turnoff
81% of experts say that lack of kitchen storage is the most off-putting factor for homebuyers. This reinforces that kitchens must be functional first, beautiful second.
Transitioning Your Kitchen From All-White to Warm & Personal
If you’re stuck with an all-white kitchen but want to embrace 2026 trends without a full renovation, here’s how to start:
Warm It Up Without Painting:
- Replace cool-white light bulbs with warm-toned LEDs (2700K-3000K)
- Add natural wood cutting boards, utensil holders, and serving pieces
- Introduce warm metals: brass, copper, or aged bronze hardware
- Layer in textiles: linen dish towels, woven placemats, wooden barstools
Add Closed Storage:
- Install cabinet doors on existing open shelving
- Use beautiful boxes, baskets, or canisters to conceal items on shelves
- Add a pantry cabinet or hutch for closed storage
- Consider adding upper cabinets if you currently have only lowers
Introduce Rich Wood Tones:
- Floating shelves in walnut or oak
- Wood island top or butcher block countertop section
- Wooden bar stools or dining chairs
- Open wood beam or wood-wrapped range hood
Personalize With Purpose:
- Display meaningful cookbooks, not just decorative objects
- Hang artwork that reflects your personality
- Add plants that thrive in kitchen conditions
- Create a coffee or tea station that reflects your morning ritual
Small Changes, Big Impact:
The goal isn’t to completely undo your white kitchen—it’s to add warmth, personality, and function so it feels like your kitchen, not a showroom.
Why This Shift Matters:
At The Intentional Design Studio, we’ve been advocating for functional, personalized kitchens that support how people actually live—not just how they want their Instagram to look. The data from this report validates what we’ve seen in our own practice: people are exhausted by the pressure to maintain “showroom perfect” spaces.
Kitchens should work for you, not against you. Open shelving might photograph beautifully, but if you’re constantly stressed about dust and visual clutter, it’s not supporting your wellbeing. All-white cabinetry might feel “safe,” but if your kitchen feels sterile and unwelcoming, it’s not encouraging you to cook healthy meals and gather with family.
The move toward rich wood tones, closed cabinetry, wellness-oriented appliances, and personalized design represents kitchens that finally prioritize the people using them over the people viewing them on social media.
We’re so grateful to FIXR for including our perspective in this important industry report!
