When used intentionally, I do love the look and function of curtains over doors. Whether it’s about adding softness, creating privacy, or managing light, curtains can be a beautiful way to enhance the experience of a space—especially when the door itself isn’t quite pulling its visual weight.
Where This Approach Shines:
Glass Doors: French Doors & Sliders
I often recommend curtains over glass doors, particularly in bedrooms, home offices, or living spaces where clients want flexibility. A floor-length panel in linen or velvet instantly elevates the room while offering both softness and control over light and privacy. This is especially valuable in spaces where you want the option to filter light during the day or create complete privacy at night.
Historic Homes & Front Entry Doors
We also see this approach work well in historic homes, where the front door opens straight into a main room. A lined curtain in a weightier fabric like wool or cotton can add insulation, filter drafts, and create a more intentional sense of entry—all while feeling timeless and quietly luxurious. In older Southern homes, this layering approach is both practical and traditional.
The Design Details That Matter:
That said, curtains should never feel like a quick fix or afterthought. We treat them as an architectural layer: the right fabric, length, fullness, and hardware can completely change the mood of a room. Whether it’s gauzy sheers that let the afternoon light pour in, or rich drapery that cocoons a space at night, curtains over doors can be as functional as they are beautiful.

Not every door benefits from curtains. Skip them in these situations:
High-Traffic Doorways – Where frequent use would make curtains impractical and frustrating to manage daily
Safety Concerns – Particularly for young children or elderly residents who might trip or get tangled
Architectural Features Worth Showcasing – When the door itself or its surrounding trim is a beautiful feature that deserves to be seen
How to Hang Curtains Over Doors: Design Tips
