Article Title: Bathroom Design Trends Report 2026
Publication Date: January 15, 2026
Author: Laura Madrigal
FIXR surveyed 101 interior design professionals to identify the trends defining bathroom design in 2026. The comprehensive report reveals a major shift toward natural light, warm earthy palettes, biophilic design, and wellness-focused features—marking the bathroom’s transformation from utility room to personal sanctuary.
Our Perspective on the 2026 Bathroom Evolution:
I was thrilled to contribute insights on two key aspects of this transformation:
The Color and Atmosphere Shift
“The aesthetic shift toward spa-like serenity, think color-drenched walls in restorative greens and soft, earthy neutrals, reflects a deeper understanding that our bathing rituals should restore us.”
This isn’t just about paint color—it’s about recognizing that the bathroom should support our wellbeing from the moment we step in. The move away from sterile whites and cool grays toward warm, nature-inspired tones creates environments where our nervous systems can actually relax.
The Wellness Integration Movement
“As someone who specializes in healthy home design, I’m thrilled to see the integration of non-toxic materials, better air quality considerations, and biophilic elements becoming standard rather than special requests. The bathroom is finally getting the wellness investment it deserves.” – Catherine Shuman
For years, I’ve been advocating for bathrooms designed with health in mind. Seeing this become mainstream—with 62% of experts prioritizing natural light, 42% embracing biophilic design, and 25% focusing on enhanced air quality—represents a fundamental shift in how we approach these spaces.
Key Findings That Align With Our Design Philosophy:
75% of Experts Confirm: Warm, Earthy Tones Have Replaced Cool Neutrals
The all-white, all-gray bathroom is officially phasing out. Homeowners want spaces that feel grounding and restorative, not clinical.
Natural Light Is the Top Priority (62% of Experts)
The connection to the outdoors is now considered essential, not a luxury. Bathrooms with abundant natural light support circadian rhythms and create genuine wellness benefits.
Slab Showers Dominate (60% of Experts)
Seamless, large-format surfaces are replacing traditional tile and grout lines. This isn’t just aesthetic—it’s about easier maintenance and cleaner, more serene visual environments.
Natural Wood Vanities Lead (51% of Experts)
The shift toward organic materials continues with natural wood tones becoming the top choice for vanities, bringing warmth and tactile richness into the space.
Wellness Features Are Standard
Steam showers (44%), smart shower systems (43%), heated floors (54%), and enhanced air quality (25%) are no longer luxury upgrades—they’re expected features in modern bathroom design.
How to Transform Your Bathroom Into a Wellness Sanctuary
Prioritize Natural Light:
- Add or enlarge windows where structurally possible
- Use frosted or textured glass for privacy without blocking light
- Consider skylights or solar tubes in windowless spaces
- Use light-colored, reflective surfaces to maximize existing light
Choose Warm, Nature-Inspired Colors:
- Soft sage greens, warm terracottas, clay neutrals
- Avoid stark whites and cool grays
- Consider color drenching (walls, trim, ceiling in one warm tone)
- Use natural stone or wood to add organic color
Integrate Biophilic Elements:
- Add plants that thrive in humidity (ferns, orchids, pothos)
- Use natural materials: wood vanities, stone surfaces, linen textiles
- Incorporate organic shapes and curves in fixtures
- Display natural objects (shells, driftwood, stones)
Upgrade to Wellness Features:
- Install heated floors for morning comfort
- Add a steam shower system
- Use smart shower controls with preset temperatures
- Incorporate aromatherapy or chromatherapy if budget allows
Focus on Air Quality:
- Install proper ventilation (crucial for humidity and VOC removal)
- Use low-VOC or zero-VOC paints and finishes
- Choose natural, non-toxic materials
- Add an air-purifying plant or small air filter
Create Spa-Like Lighting:
- Layer lighting: ambient, task, accent
- Use dimmers on all fixtures
- Install warm-toned bulbs (2700K)
- Add under-vanity or toe-kick lighting for nighttime navigation
Simplify and Declutter:
- Use slab surfaces or large-format tiles (less grout = easier cleaning)
- Choose floating vanities for visual lightness
- Install built-in storage to keep surfaces clear
- Select natural wood tones for warmth without visual weight
Why This Shift Matters:
At The Intentional Design Studio, we’ve been designing wellness-focused bathrooms for years. What’s happening in 2026 isn’t just a trend—it’s the design industry finally catching up to what the science has been telling us: our environments profoundly impact our health.
The bathroom is where we begin and end each day. It should support morning energy and evening wind-down, not add stress through harsh lighting, cold materials, or poor air quality. When we prioritize natural light, warm colors, non-toxic materials, and biophilic elements, we’re not just decorating—we’re creating spaces that actively support wellbeing.
This report confirms what we’ve seen in our practice: people are done with spaces that look good but feel wrong. They want bathrooms that restore them.
We’re so grateful to FIXR for including our perspective in this important industry report!
