We were thrilled to be featured in Apartment Guide for their Lunar New Year coverage! Being asked to share design insights on celebrating the Year of the Snake was an honor. We love how cultural celebrations offer beautiful opportunities to design with intention and meaning.

The Year of the Snake represents wisdom, transformation, and strategic energy, all themes that align beautifully with thoughtful, wellness-focused interior design. Apartment Guide reached out to explore how homeowners can honor these symbols through design choices that feel both celebratory and deeply personal.

The Complete Design Framework I Shared:

When Apartment Guide asked how to bring the energy of the Year of the Snake into home design, here’s the approach I recommended:

The Snake is associated with wisdom, transformation, and strategic energy—making this a great time to design with intention. To bring this energy into a space, consider paring down clutter and curating decor with a “less but better” mindset, allowing only meaningful or high-quality pieces to shine.

Layered Lighting Approach:

Layered lighting, including soft accent lighting and statement fixtures, can create a sense of depth and warmth. Think beyond overhead lighting—incorporate table lamps, wall sconces, or LED strip lighting to create visual interest and multiple mood options throughout the day.

Sophisticated Textiles:

Textiles like silk, velvet, or subtly embossed materials add a touch of sophistication while reinforcing a refined aesthetic. These materials catch and reflect light in subtle ways, creating that sense of depth and transformation the Snake symbolizes.

Colors for Transformation & Renewal:

If a transformation is in order, a fresh coat of paint in deep greens, rich neutrals, or softened earth tones can evoke both groundedness and renewal—perfectly in tune with the Snake’s symbolism of wisdom and growth. Consider warm taupes, muted olive, or nuanced clay shades that feel both modern and timeless.

Why This Approach Resonates:

This “less but better” mindset isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces that support your nervous system by reducing visual noise and decision fatigue. At The Intentional Design Studio, we believe every design choice should have intention behind it. Whether you’re celebrating the Lunar New Year or simply seeking to refresh your space, designing with purpose creates environments that truly support how you live and feel.

We’re so grateful to Apartment Guide for the opportunity to share these insights with their readers!

About the Designer

Catherine
Shuman

For me, design is less about staging perfection and more about creating spaces where real life gets better. It's about the moment you realize your headaches have stopped. The way your toddler sleeps through the night in their new room. The dinner parties that run long because nobody wants to leave your table.

These are the moments I design for — the ones that prove style and wellness aren't just compatible, they're inseparable.
