Southern Living feature on curtains over doors design trend with expert insights from Catherine Shuman of The Intentional Design Studio

We were delighted to be featured in Southern Living for their piece on the curtains-over-doors trend! Being asked to share our perspective on this design approach was wonderful—it’s a perfect example of how thoughtful layering can solve practical problems while creating beautiful, intentional spaces.

Article Title: Should You Hang Curtains Over Your Doors? Designers Weigh In
Publication Date: April 12, 2025

Southern Living explored whether curtains over doors are a smart design choice or a fleeting trend, asking designers to weigh in on when this approach works—and when it doesn’t. The article examines both the aesthetic and functional benefits of door curtains, helping readers make informed decisions for their own homes.

The Complete Design Framework I Shared:

When Southern Living asked about the curtains-over-doors trend, here’s the comprehensive perspective I provided:

When used intentionally, I do love the look and function of curtains over doors. Whether it’s about adding softness, creating privacy, or managing light, curtains can be a beautiful way to enhance the experience of a space—especially when the door itself isn’t quite pulling its visual weight.

Where This Approach Shines:

Glass Doors: French Doors & Sliders

I often recommend curtains over glass doors, particularly in bedrooms, home offices, or living spaces where clients want flexibility. A floor-length panel in linen or velvet instantly elevates the room while offering both softness and control over light and privacy. This is especially valuable in spaces where you want the option to filter light during the day or create complete privacy at night.

Historic Homes & Front Entry Doors

We also see this approach work well in historic homes, where the front door opens straight into a main room. A lined curtain in a weightier fabric like wool or cotton can add insulation, filter drafts, and create a more intentional sense of entry—all while feeling timeless and quietly luxurious. In older Southern homes, this layering approach is both practical and traditional.

The Design Details That Matter:

That said, curtains should never feel like a quick fix or afterthought. We treat them as an architectural layer: the right fabric, length, fullness, and hardware can completely change the mood of a room. Whether it’s gauzy sheers that let the afternoon light pour in, or rich drapery that cocoons a space at night, curtains over doors can be as functional as they are beautiful.

When to Avoid This Trend:

Not every door benefits from curtains. Skip them in these situations:

High-Traffic Doorways – Where frequent use would make curtains impractical and frustrating to manage daily

Safety Concerns – Particularly for young children or elderly residents who might trip or get tangled

Architectural Features Worth Showcasing – When the door itself or its surrounding trim is a beautiful feature that deserves to be seen

How to Hang Curtains Over Doors: Design Tips

Hardware Placement:
Mount your curtain rod 4-6 inches above the door frame and extend it 6-8 inches on each side. This allows curtains to stack off the door when open, maintaining full access.

Fabric Selection:

  • Privacy & Insulation: Choose lined curtains in heavier fabrics like velvet, cotton, or wool
  • Light Filtering: Opt for linen or lightweight cotton that softens light while maintaining airflow
  • Sheer Elegance: Use gauzy fabrics for purely aesthetic softness without blocking light

Length & Fullness:
Curtains should just kiss the floor (or puddle slightly for a more romantic look). For proper fullness, your curtain panels should be 2-2.5 times the width of your rod.

Functional Hardware:
Consider tiebacks or holdbacks to secure curtains when the door is in use. This keeps fabric out of the way during high-traffic times while maintaining the design statement.

Cleaning & Maintenance:
Door curtains collect dust and require regular care. Choose washable fabrics or plan for professional cleaning, especially near entryways where outdoor elements enter.

Why This Approach Matters:

At The Intentional Design Studio, we believe every design choice should have a reason behind it. Curtains over doors aren’t about following a trend—they’re about solving real problems (light control, privacy, insulation, softness) while creating spaces that feel layered, intentional, and thoughtfully designed. When done well, they add both function and beauty. When done poorly, they’re just fabric in the way.

About the Designer

Catherine
Shuman

For me, design is less about staging perfection and more about creating spaces where real life gets better. It's about the moment you realize your headaches have stopped. The way your toddler sleeps through the night in their new room. The dinner parties that run long because nobody wants to leave your table.

These are the moments I design for — the ones that prove style and wellness aren't just compatible, they're inseparable.
